As internal platforms and self-service become increasingly widespread, relational databases are often left out of this transformation.

State management, data integrity, performance, and regulatory constraints make it more complex to industrialize them than other infrastructure components.

Since 2020, within Criteo’s DBA team, we have been evolving our approach to make data services more accessible to developers through self-service.

Through this experience report, we will share the key lessons learned from this journey: what works well, what remains difficult to automate, and the trade-offs required between team autonomy, standardization, and governance.

We will illustrate these lessons with concrete examples around provisioning, schema deployments, access management, observability, as well as the challenges involved in supporting developers within a self-service model.

The goal is to show how Platform Engineering principles can be applied to relational databases while taking their specific constraints into account.
