Information

Ask yourself what you entrust to your smartphone every day:
your real-time location, your saved passwords (+ your MFA), your calls, emails, instant messages, and much more.

Recent events and geopolitics are pushing us to strengthen our digital sovereignty. And yet, the smartphone still seems to be a blind spot.

We’re two enthusiasts who love tinkering with our devices. With software control and sovereignty in mind, we’ve been replacing the OS on our Android phones for years. Over time, we started installing alternative OSes on our friends’ and family members’ devices as well.

We’ll tell you what this changes—both technically and in everyday use—which OS to choose depending on your needs and preferences, what sovereignty benefits you can gain, and what the limitations are.
Spoiler: most of these OSes are very easy to use because they’re extremely close to “regular” Android and compatible with almost all the Android apps you use every day. At this stage, for most people, we recommend /e/OS.

However, changing your OS isn’t always straightforward. The process isn’t compatible with every Android device on the market and can involve some risks.
That’s why we decided to help the general public make the switch.
Since 2023, we’ve been pioneers in organizing “flash parties”: one- or two-day events where anyone can come along and change their operating system with our help, entirely supported by volunteers.

After flashing more than a hundred devices in the Lyon area, using alternative OSes ourselves for years, and supporting a wide range of people in their day-to-day use, what have we learned?,We’ll share the full story in this keynote!
